Jahrhundert, Italien](https://smb.museum-digital.de/collection/155) Inventarnummer: 504 Beschreibung Die Vermählung Amors mit Psyche war das erste von drei Gemälden Batonis, das Friedrich der Große im Laufe der Jahre erwarb. Es hätten noch mehr werden sollen, einige bestellte Stücke aber hat Batoni nicht mehr geliefert. Im Zuge des Aufbaus der Bildergalerie ließ der König unser Bild durch den Feldmarschall Jakob Keith vor März 1756 direkt bei Batoni in Rom in Auftrag geben. Von den zeitgenössischen italienischen Malern hatte der König lange Zeit nichts gehalten. Von Batoni, dem damals berühmtesten Maler in Rom, hatte Friedrich wohl zunächst 1751 vom Grafen Fran - cesco Algarotti gehört. Dann war er ihm von seiner Schwester Wilhelmine, der Markgräfin von Bayreuth, empfohlen worden, die sich 1755 in Rom aufgehalten hatte und ihrem Bruder in einem Brief vom 23. Mai 1755 von Mengs und Batoni berichtete: »Auch Batoni ist ein großer Maler und gar nicht teuer; er steht weit über Pesne«. Noch vor Ausbruch des Siebenjährigen Krieges ließ der König das vorliegende Bild bei Batoni, zwei Gegenstücke bei Mengs und ein Bild bei Placido Costanzi bestellen, das als Gegenstück zu dem Batonis dienen sollte. Der Krieg verhinderte es, daß der im Dienste des Königs von Polen stehende Sachse Mengs seine damals begonnenen Werke ausführte und lieferte. Batoni aber schickte sein noch 1756 vollendetes Bild, ebenso lieferte Costanzi 1757 seine Darstellung von Apoll und Daphne. Batonis Gemälde wurde Friedrich während der preußischen Besetzung Sachsens ins erste Winterquartier (1756/57) nach Dresden gesandt. Der König soll es während des ganzen Krieges mit sich geführt haben. Bezahlt wurde es erst nach Friedensschluß 1763 durch den Galerieinspektor Matthias Oesterreich. Damals kam es in die fertiggestellte Bildergalerie, als einziges Zeugnis eines noch lebenden Malers, während das Bildnis Costanzis als Gegenstück für nicht tauglich befunden wurde und ins Neue Palais kam. Damals versuchte der König, Batoni als Hofmaler zu gewinnen. Batoni konnte sich aber nicht entschließen, die Einladung anzunehmen. Gleichzeitig bestellte Friedrich bei ihm drei großformatige Stücke aus der griechischen und römischen Geschichte bzw. Mythologie, von denen nur eines fertig wurde, und zwar erst 1775. Es kam ins Neue Palais. In einem Inventar von 1805 wird Batonis Bild von 1756 wie folgt beschrieben: »Venus gibt ihre Einwilligung zur Verbindung Amors und (der) Psyche, die Hymen zusammengibt und (denen) Zephyr Kühlung zubläst«. Links, auf dem von einem Taubenpaar gezogenen Prunkwagen, sitzt Venus und fordert ihren Sohn Amor auf, Psyche den Ring an den Finger zu stecken. Hymen, der Gott der Hochzeit, hält Psyches Hand mit dem abgespreizten Ringfinger. Der Wagen der Venus und die beiden Götter stehen auf Wolkenbänken, die sterbliche Psyche dagegen auf dem Sockel des Brautlagers. Nach Puhlmanns Beschreibung ist der »Kopf der Psyche das Bildnis der Frau Batoni, der Signora Lucie, die in ihrer Jugend nebst der Frau des Mahler Mengs die Ersten Schönheiten in Rom waren«. Das Bild mit seinen weit unterlebensgroßen Figuren, mit seiner reichen, um die zentrale, kunstvoll verschränkte Dreiergruppe angeordneten ausbalancierten Komposition, der brillanten Farbigkeit, subtilen Helldunkelmodellierung und der graziösen Eleganz der Figuren gehört zu den Hauptwerken des Malers. Er knüpfte an die klassizistische Tradition Carlo Marattas an, die ihrerseits auf Annibale Carracci und Raffael sich berief. Batonis eleganter Klassizismus bildet die unmittelbare Vorstufe zum Neoklassizismus von Gavin Hamilton und Mengs, dessen 1760 entstandenes Deckenbild des Parnaß in der Villa Albani, nur vier Jahre nach Batonis Bild entstanden, den neuen Stil inaugurierte.| 200 Meisterwerke der europäischen Malerei - Gemäldegalerie Berlin, 2019 SIGNATUR / INSCHRIFT: Bez. rechts unten auf dem Sockel des Bettes: Ponpeo • Batoni • Pire • [U]Ao. 1756. Roma • ::::::::::::_ The Marriage of Cupid and Psyche was the first of three paintings by Batoni acquired over a period of years by Frederick the Great. There would have been more, but the artist failed to deliver a number of works ordered by the king. In the course of assembling his picture gallery, and before March of 1756, the king had this work commissioned directly from Batoni in Rome by Field Marshal Jakob Keith. Quite some time, the king disliked the contemporary Italian painters. Frederick seems to have heard about Batoni – then the most celebrated painter in Rome – for the first time in 1751 from Count Francesco Algarotti. Batoni was then recommended to him by his sister Wilhelmine, the Margravine of Bayreuth, who had stayed in Rome in 1755, and had reported to her brother about Mengs and Batoni in a letter dated 23 May 1755: “Batoni too is a great painter, and not terribly expensive; he is far above Pesne.” Before the outbreak of the Seven Year’s War, the King commissioned the present painting from Batoni, along with two pendants bei Mengs, and a picture by Placido Costanzi that was intended to serve as a companion piece to Batoni’s picture. The war made it impossible for Mengs – a Saxon who was in the service of the King of Poland – to complete and deliver the works he had begun for Frederick. Batoni did however send his picture, completed in 1756, while Costanzi’s Apollo and Daphne arrived as well in 1757. During the Prussian occupation of Saxony, Frederick had Batoni’s painting sent to the first wintering quarters (1756/57) in Dresden. The King is said to have carried it with him throughout the war. It was paid for by the gallery inspector Matthias Oesterreich only after the peace agreement of 1763. It then entered the now finished picture gallery as the only work by a living artist, while Costanzi’s work, regarded as unsuitable as a pendant, went to the Neues Palais. At that time, the King attempted to recruit Batoni as court painter. Batoni could however not decide to accept this invitation. At the same time, Frederick ordered three large-format works based on Greek and Roman legends or myths from Batoni, only one of which was completed, and moreover only in 1775. It entered the Neues Palais. In an inventory dated 1805, Batoni’s picture of 1756 is described as follows: “Venus gives her assent to the marriage of Cupid and Psyche, which is effected by Hymen, while Zephyr delivers a cooling blast.” Seated on the left in a splendid chariot drawn by a pair of doves is Venus, who enjoins her son to place the ring on Psyche’s finger. Hymen, the god of marriage, holds Psyche’s hand, its ring finger extended. Venus’s chariot and the two gods stand on cloudbanks, while the mortal Psyche in contrast is supported by the floor of the bridal chamber. According to Puhlmann’s description, “Psyche’s head is a likeness of Signora Lucie, Batoni’s wife, who was the greatest beauty in Rome in her youth alongside the wife of the painter Mengs”. With its far smaller than life-sized figures, its rich, balanced composition, which revolves around a central, artfully interlocking triadic group, the brilliant colours, subtle modelling, and the gracious elegance of the figures, this is one of the principal works of this artist. Here, he takes up the classical tradition of Carlo Maratta, who in turn invoked Annibale Carracci and Raphael.
